Four minutes, not four days. The anatomy of a real charter quote.

How routing, wind, fuel and airport fees turn a request into a price you can trust.

Summary

  • A charter price is built from six measurable inputs, not from a broker's mood.
  • Block time, not distance, is what you pay for.
  • Repositioning is the hidden half of every one way price.
  • A quote that arrives in minutes can be more accurate than one that arrives in days.

Most people who charter for the first time expect a price to appear the way a hotel rate does: fixed, published, comparable. Instead they receive an email three days later with a number and no explanation. This guide explains what actually goes into that number, so that you can read a quote the way an operator reads it, and so that you can tell a serious quote from a guess.

1. The route is not a straight line

The first thing a flight desk computes is the airway distance, not the great circle distance. Airways bend around military areas, terrain and congested airspace. Milan to London is 585 nautical miles as the crow flies and closer to 620 on the routes an aircraft is actually cleared to fly. On a light jet that difference is eight or nine minutes, and eight minutes is real money.

Then comes wind. The North Atlantic and the Alps both produce seasonal patterns: a westbound leg in February can be twenty minutes longer than the same leg eastbound. A quote that ignores wind is not wrong, it is simply an average, and you are not flying an average day.

2. The aircraft decides the speed and the burn

Every type has a cruise speed, a climb profile and a fuel curve. A Citation XLS+ and a Challenger 350 fly the same route in noticeably different times and burn very different quantities of fuel. This is why a quote must name the type, or at least the category, before it names a price. A price without an aircraft is a placeholder.

3. You pay for block time, not distance

Operators bill by the hour, and the hour starts when the engines start. Taxi at a large airport, holding on approach, a de-icing queue in December: all of it is block time. A serious quote applies the type's real block time for that airport pair, not a cruise-speed calculation.

Distance tells you how far. Block time tells you how much.

4. Positioning is the half nobody mentions

The aircraft is rarely parked where you are. For a one way flight it must fly to you empty and, after dropping you, fly home empty. Depending on where the nearest available aircraft sits, positioning adds between a quarter and almost half of the flying. This is why a round trip within a few days is often only slightly more expensive than a one way, and why an empty leg can be dramatically cheaper: the positioning has already been paid for by someone else.

5. Airports charge, and they do not charge equally

Landing fees, parking, handling, passenger taxes and, in some countries, navigation charges vary by an order of magnitude. Farnborough and Luton do not cost the same. Nice in August does not cost what it costs in November. Slot restricted airports add coordination costs. A quote that shows one lump sum without these lines is hiding either a margin or a mistake.

  • Landing and take off fees, by aircraft weight
  • Parking, by hour or by night
  • Handling, by aircraft category
  • Passenger and security taxes, by country
  • Overflight and navigation charges, by route
  • De-icing, catering and ground transport, on request

6. Why four minutes can beat four days

The old process was slow because a person had to phone operators, wait for replies, and assemble a spreadsheet. Slow did not mean accurate: it meant stale. Availability moves hourly. A system that computes airway routing, seasonal wind, the type's fuel curve and the current fee schedule for both airports can return an honest indicative range immediately, then confirm the exact aircraft and tail number within the hour. That is what our request desk does, and it is why we show you block time and a price range together: one without the other is not information.
